On Sunday I began my lessons in music theory with tutor Ashton Maggs, in preparation for my Conservatorium entry test. Previously, when I was still doing piano lessons, I sat the Grade One AMEB Theory exam, but that was all. Due to knowing so little theory, in the few theory assignments we had this year in Music Performance, I took whatever shortcuts I could because I found theory incredibly frustrating. So I was somewhat dreading my theory lessons, however much I wanted to do well in my test. But Ashton is a great teacher. The lessons go reasonably quickly, are not too frustrating, and the best part is the satisfaction I feel from learning something – making progress is almost fun! …Well, I wouldn’t go quite so far as fun, but it is remarkably tolerable.
